We’ve been asked by some members who are Labour supporters to clarify the rules on voting in the upcoming Labour leadership election. Whilst we acknowledge that not all NUBSLI members support Labour, for those who do we wanted to clarify the voting criteria.
If you are a NUBSLI member (and therefore a Unite member), then one of the three options below will apply to you:
Option 1:
I joined NUBSLI on or before 12 January 2016 and am a Labour affiliate supporter.
You are eligible to vote and will be contacted when the leadership voting window opens.
Option 2:
I joined NUBSLI on or before 12 January 2016 but am not a Labour affiliate. I would like to become an affiliate so that I can vote.
You can register to become an affiliate before 8 August 2016. You can do this on the Labour Party website..
Option 3
I joined NUBSLI after 13 January 2016.
You must register to become a Labour supporter and pay £25. You must do this from Monday 18 July 5.00pm until Wednesday 20 July 5.00pm.
What is the criteria on being an affiliate supporter?
To be an affiliate, you must meet the following criteria:
- Pay the political levy – this will be the case unless you opted out when joining. The levy is a portion of your member subscription that helps to fund political campaigning by the union.
- Agree to the statement that you support the aims and values of the Labour party and are not a supporter of any other political party and agree for your contact details to be shared with the Labour party.
- Be on the electoral register at the address given to the union and the Labour party.
- Provide a date of birth and email address.
Can’t remember when you joined?
If you’re unsure of when you joined you can find out by getting in touch with Unite. You can find which office to call on their website.
